The Cure - Disintegration
Can't believe this came out 25 years ago. For me it is the perfect farewell to the eighties, the final nail in the coffin. From the opening chimes of "Plainsong" it feels like an extrovert autumn funeral procession through the cold streets of darkest England. The whole record is like one big goodbye to someone or something. Each song so simple but so well crafted and the sounds so big but never boisterous. Such a cold record but with such a warm sound. You can tell a record is magnificent when you can't pick a stand out track. Side three on this double release has only two tracks, "Prayers for Rain" and "The Same Deep Water As You." Both drenched in atmosphere and wallowing in the mood. The Cure have always faced the mood but never sitting back and bathing in it like this. So good.

One of those records that makes you think "I wish I'd thought of that..."
But you didn't did you ?
Electronic at heart but with a lively drum sound and some soaring guitar parts. "Signal 30" is a blazer and "Spitfire" and "Everest" are immense. The best thing about this record is that it's never too clever for its own good. Whilst at the same time, being pretty clever.
