The Oldish One

Sonic Youth - "Dirty"

Wow ! Not heard this in a while. It's so so good, it just blazes along. The guitars are wild but melodic throughout and the tunes just soar. The Youth at their self styled, noncholant best. From the vile slide of "100%" to the violent and virulent "Drunken Butterfly," this record builds and falls in equal measure. I love it all. "Wish Fulfillment," "Sugar Cane" and "Youth Against Fascism," and you're still only just skating into side three. Thurston's tunes are standout as always but Kim's are full of depth, you can almost slide into them and take a swim. I'm a big Lee Renaldo fan and he delivers as always, although theres a tune on the b side of the "100%" 12 inch called "Genetic" which should have made it onto this album. Side Three and Four keep up the pace with "Chapel Hill" and "Purr" emblazoned with melodic violent guitars. "On The Strip" gives a soothing pool of wah wah to float in, and it all concludes with Kim's "Creme Brûlée." What a treat.

The Newish One

Cate Le Bon - Mug Museum

This record is so smart it should be given an honorary masters. It comes on pink vinyl too, which means a lot. The band are tight and it sounds that way. Just a band playing cool tunes. Its amazing, clever and sassy with hardly, if any effects. It just sounds that way because that's how they play. Well written and off the wall, it sounds at times like Marquee Moon being played by The Velvets, Nico and an early incarnation of Talking Heads. If you haven't got it, get it and check out a song on a 7" vinyl released after this, called "He's Leaving". Thats a gem too.
