Everything on this record sounds perfect. Cohen wanted to keep it sparse, and does, but its the small bursts of strings and backing vocals that are added to the arrangements that give it such a warm depth. The instruments sound like they are playing themselves whilst waltzing around a dusty old ballroom. It says on the back that "the only politics are the politics of love." Its hard to write about something that is so subtle and pure. It's best just to pop it on and turn down the lights.
The Newish One
Harum Scarum by Joe Gideon and The Shark
It was released in 2009 so that's still newish in my book.
I love bands that just stick to their guns and work hard to get their ideas out there. There is so much hidden depth to this record that slowly worms its way into your head on repeated listening. It must have taken a lot of hard work to get that vision down. It's full of the blackest comedy and delivered with such focus and self belief, but with a tongue placed forever in its cheek. I love this record, it never fails to deliver. Watching them live helps you understand how this record could be possible. It's obvious every time you listen, that it's so unique it can never be touched by anything else, as there will never be anything else quite like it.
