The Newish One
Jenny Lewis "Just One of the Guys"
This Jenny Lewis tune, "Just One Of The Guys" is instant, pure sugar cane. The sound of the first guitar is so sickly sweet you know where its going to go. The rest of the album on first listen is unfortunately, more like saccharine, but I hope it improves with time. It's obviously taken a lot of hard work to get it sounding this way and some of the time it really does work. I believe this is the only tune on the album with Beck involved and you can tell. It's ace. It's got some of the same tricks which makes 'Sea Change', so deep and pretty. The whole album is mixed pop, but this track is pure pop, and the lyrics make me wanna be a lost, wandering, middle aged woman. The cover probably sums the whole thing up to be fair. Loving this tune though, its perfectly crafted, and the chorus...
Check out a tune she did as Jenny and Johnny a few years back called "Big Wave" too.
The Oldish One
Bob Dylan "With God on our Side"
This one is just a sign of these unfortunate times. The vinyl looks like it's been trodden on more times than it's been played (and its been played a lot) which is always a good sign.
